New Avatamsaka Commentary Book

For those studying the Flower Ornament Scripture (aka Flower Garland Scripture or Avatamsaka Sutra) there's short book just out by Ben Connelly called "Inside the Flower Garland Sutra: Huyan Buddhism and the Modern World" by Wisdom — reasonably priced — ISBN 9781614298779

Not that we should discriminate - but, for what it's worth, I think he's done a great job. Ben Connelly, Soto Zen teacher in the Katagiri lineage, uses a text from the Korean master Uisang "Ocean Seal Chart" to engage with the Sutra, making for a readable mix of metaphysics and anecdotes.

I found his book about Yogacara to be quite satisfying. It wasn't too different from other texts we've read in the sangha. I must say, it was pretty fulfilling.

Thank you for the recommendation, Hosui. That sounds like an interesting book.

Having read a few of Ben's books (The Grass Roof Hermitage and the two on Yogacara) often I find he doesn't quite go deep enough for me but a commentary on the Avatamsaka Sutra is very welcome.
