You've mentioned routine but for me flexibility is also key. I've got a busy job, kids, extra-curricular activities etc and try to sit early before everyone else is up, but if that isn't possible (kids waking in the night or early in the morning) I try to sit at lunch and if that isn't possible in the evening once they've all gone to bed - I used to get annoyed with myself if I didn't sit at the time I wanted to sit at, but for me, learning to accept the chaos is part of the practice.
