    The two steps of Shikantaza

    Step 1: Sit.

    Step 2: There is no step two.
    I know nothing.

      One could argue there is no step.

          The two steps of Shikantaza

          In a spring outside time, flowers bloom on a withered tree;
          you ride a jade elephant backwards, chasing the winged dragon-deer;
          now as you hide far beyond innumerable peaks--
          the white moon, a cool breeze, the dawn of a fortunate day

                But this implies that we're not living when we sit...or bringing our sitting into our life...or...or...or...oh I'll never understand this zen business 8)

                Step 1: Disappear

                Step 2. Reappear

                  Yes, you are right!

                  But sitting and then nothing else sounds like a wasted life, being like a bump on a log, even when the sitting is sat as complete, as whole.

                  When walking on the path, taking step 1 with the left foot and step 2 with the right foot, the feet are meeting with every step, right? Woven into one fluid motion, into a wholeness of walking, with no thought of separation between left and right foot. Sitting as if life is complete and nothing is lacking. Living as if sitting, life complete and nothing lacking. Body-mind-sitting-living. Living-sitting-body-mind.

                          Step 1: Sit.

                          Step 2: There is no step two.
                          Wrong.

                          Let's say

                          Step 1: breathe

                          Step 2: ...

                          To save all sentient beings, though beings are numberless.
                          To penetrate reality, though reality is boundless.
                          To transform all delusion, though delusions are immeasurable.
                          To attain the enlightened way, a way non-attainable.
