I notice that many members use the salutation "gassho" after a post. Is this written simply to symbolize the gesture? That is, you would never actually speak the words "gassho" to someone,..... or would you?

Kinda doesn't matter what anyone else would do, does it?

Re: gassho
it is like saying "yours truly"
It is a sign of respect. Not spoken with words, just spoken from the heart.
We put our hands together to show humility and respect. We put our hands together to show to realization of our practice. Hands together, we are whole.
Or...it is just the way things are signed around here...

A gesture,
not spoken; you dont see me, when reading something I wrote, so
you dont see me putting hands together and bowing, so I write
_()_, some use _/_, most use gassho. There are many meanings
or opinions about what gassho means, probably Jundo has a good
link to some detailed description he once posted ;-)

Re: gassho
A requirement of the medium, I think. I could bow all day to this screen and you'd probably never see me. Just a friendly reminder that we are, in fact, constantly bowing to you me I us we.

Re: gassho
gassho...one could write a whole book on this mudra, a very specific gesture filled with esoteric significance.
To cut a long story short: one with. No separation between I and all sentient beings, I and reality, here and there, body and mind.
Gassho is where the pair of opposites collapse into neither nor. You have two hands and yet they form one.

Re: gassho
Gassho is the way we salute in respect to people. We have to write the words since you can't see me doing it.
But hey I have a question for you guys. Have you ever done a physical gassho to the screen when reading a post that hits the spot? I have ops:Hondō Kyōnin
