    Walk away from war

Its easy to get caught up in things, to start a war inside and willingly to fight it. And that can refrain us from focus and clarity both the formal practice of zazen and the zen practice in living our life doing our dutys.

One of my favorite quotes to remind me of a helpful attitude and action in this came from my psychotherapist. (whom I sometimes call a secret zenmaster altough he denies all connection to religion or philosophy)
He said -"You cant win the war in the war. You need to walk away."
That has helped me as a remider of letting things be.

Is there any of you who have similar or other things that helps you in this matter and that hels you in your zen practice? It would be lovely to read and discuss if you want to share.

    Hi Seijin

I think that walking away from war is good advice. Therapists seem to be good at building up a storehouse of aphorisms and helpful phrases.

One phrase I use often comes from the Tibetan lojong (mind training) tradition, in the Seven Points of Mind Training:

Don't pick up what is not yours.

Most of what is in our own minds isn't ours to deal with and can just be left to do its own thing.

In a previous life there was a saying 'if you find a cross it does not mean it is yours to carry'.

When something or someone in my life has done something that makes me feel anger, that anger feels justified. After all, there is something real that is unfair, so angry thoughts are sort of "emboldened". But anger is toxic, so I've started calling angry thoughts "liars", to take the energy away from them. Even if I need to do something about what has happened, anger is a poison and little else.
