Mixing Zazen with Insight Meditation, Separate Sits

    Hi everyone,
I have recently switched out a separate session of Shikantaza to an insight meditation for one of my 2/3 daily sits. I am finding this both provides me with something valuable in of itself, and doesn't (seem to) interfere with later sits. Are there any problems with doing this, or any thoughts about it?

    Hi Rob,

I don't believe there is a problem, as long as you can keep each of the perspectives and approaches in their place and time. It can be tricky if one begins to mix the two. It is a bit like practicing baseball and American football at the same time. Although both are played with balls on the same ground, and both are superb sports, they have their own ways. When sitting Shikantaza and practicing the Soto way, please do so thoroughly. Don't brink a catcher's glove and bat to the football game.

Thank you very much Jundo, this makes a lot of sense to me. I will keep a close eye on this and strive to keep them separate / be careful not to mix the two.
