Where to find Dushun: Discernments of the Dharmadhatu of Avatamsaka in english?

    Hi folks,

During one of my wanderings on the internet I came across a few references to Discernments of the Dharmadhatu of Avatamsaka by Dushun. Does anyone know if there is an english translation available? It was mentioned on this article (see below) on The Huayan school on the Standford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

    Hi Hoseki

It says in the Stanford Encyclopedia:

Dushun authored only a handful of texts. Chief among these is Discernments of the Dharmadhatu of Avatamsaka (Ch. Huayan fajie guanmen, trans. Gimello 1976b, 457–510). This no longer exists as an independent text. But it is interspersed within several commentaries, most notably those by Chengguan (T45.1883; trans. Cleary 1993, 71–124) and Zongmi (T45.1884, trans. King 1976).
Cleary 1993. Entry into the Inconceivable: An Introduction to Hua-yen Buddhism, Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press. (I have that myself so can probably scan the relevant part)
King, Sallie Behn, 1975. Commentary to the Hua-yan Dharma-Realm Meditation, MA Thesis: The University of British Columbia can be downloaded here.

If you want to read generally about the Huayan school two books that Jundo tends to recommend are:

Cook, F (1977). Hua-yen Buddhism: The Jewel Net of Indra (my preference)
Chang, Garma C.C. (1992), The Buddhist teaching of Totality. The Philosophy of Hua Yen Buddhism

Thanks Kokuu! I’m a little embarrassing that I didn’t pay enough attention to the foot notes.

I did see how the original doesn’t exist anymore. But I figure the commentaries might be helpful. I read Cook’s book a number of years ago. I’m going to check to see if there is any mention of it.

Yes, I had several openings reading these books, my first introduction to the Hua-yan, which had so much influence on Master Dogen and our Zen ways, direct and indirect. Everything is everything is everything else and the whole thing ... but what thing at all?
