    My Ordination in Minnesota

I expect to be ordained very soon (tomorrow, local time) and welcome your presence. The main event is at:
    Saturday May 6, 2023 • 7:00 p.m CDT.

    Clouds in Water Zen Center
    445 Farrington St.
    St Paul, MN

but Zoom is also an option:
Zoom is the leader in modern enterprise video communications, with an easy, reliable cloud platform for video and audio conferencing, chat, and webinars across mobile, desktop, and room systems. Zoom Rooms is the original software-based conference room solution used around the world in board, conference, huddle, and training rooms, as well as executive offices and classrooms. Founded in 2011, Zoom helps businesses and organizations bring their teams together in a frictionless environment to get more done. Zoom is a publicly traded company headquartered in San Jose, CA.

One way or the other I hope I can see you there.

Perhaps of interest here; We will be playing it by ear, but there likely will be some accommodations to my medical condition. Mostly that probably will mean that some of what would otherwise be full prostrations will be standing bows and I will likely sit on a seiza bench instead of a zafu. As well, even though I will have little to say, I will be reading from notes.

My teacher here is Myo-On Susan Hagler. She says that she's met Jundo at some function or another. I started working with her a year-and-a-half ago almost at the end of the Treeleaf practice period, but we've known each other since practicing together at the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center in 1980.

To be entirely clear, I am not a hōkan = 幇間 = taikomochi = geisha, but I do wonder if my preceptor was having a bit of fun with me...

I live in South Dakota near Sioux Falls. I know approximately where you will be ordained and I will try to be there via Zoom. I no longer drive. They say growing old is not for sissies. This is an understatement for growing older in America is prolonged periods of torture. However, I have found some peace in Zazen and If you wish to call it Shikantaza so be it. I find it’s hardly just sitting. My mind goes down a million rabbit holes before it comes to my breath and just looking at what is in front of me. There are a couple dozen books near the place I sit in an armed straight back office chair that I bought with the help of my lovely wife, my most essential teacher who approves of my Zen because it makes me a calmer soul. I will be at your ordination. I think I can Zoom in. I am an old man who no longer drves. I will Zoom in.

                          Hōkan,

I live in Rochester and can try to do some schedule rearranging and attend in-person this evening. Strangely, until your post I was unaware of what appears to be a large and vibrant Soto Zen center in St Paul.

                          Gassho,

Please excuse any indication that I am trying to teach anything. I am a priest in training and have no qualifications or credentials to teach Zen practice or the Dharma.

Congratulations, Hōkan! I wish you a wonderful ceremony.

Sadly the time difference means that will probably too be late for me to attend on Zoom but I am really happy to hear this news.

Thank you for your practice and service.

                            Deep bows
