it doesn’t matter. we all have different reasons that brought us here, but forget all of that and just sit without any want to get something from it. Then see what happens

I love this response - the humour, and I can relate. The stillness and inner peace I feel during meditation is a superpower

How I understand it, is that entering into zazen with an expectation of gaining something, isn't really the point. Some teachers talk of "practice/enlightenment".

Zazen is for life, not just for Christmas.

              Hello .
What drew me to start practicing zazen was a desire not to join the squirrel wheel. I saw a need to completely release my ingrained patterns and thoughts about how things in life should be. things that you unconsciously follow without really wanting to. for this change to happen I was aware that I had to face myself. who I really am. I realized quite quickly that zazen gave the effect I wanted. therefore I have continued every day for almost 7 years. over time my interest in Buddhism as a religion grew. sometimes zazen feels good, other times less good, just like life.

              sorry for a long answer.

I sit because it is something to do as an expression of religion and of wholeness and completeness of all things being what they are. Really I suffer from a lot of mental delusion and anxiety related to living life. As an old teacher of mine used to express "meditate and destroy". I am trying to Destroy the boundaries, limitation and separateness of all things. Get past all the can't and won't and nevers and start looking at possibilities. Break All the divisions and the categories while also finding their use.

Ultimately I am just a human trying to forget the self in this mucky world for a few minutes while understanding we need to make it better however we can bc we are all in this together.

I sit because I need it.

My mind gets petty and conceited if I leave it unattended for too long, this results in my suffering and of those around me.

Zazen doesn't make my shitty thoughts go away, but it does enable me to be less reactive to them.

As far as a "why" is important? Who cares.
What matters is that zazen happens, it'll work on us independent of the why.

At least that's how I understand it.
