    Zen Peacemakers

The organisations founded by Bernie Glassman are still active. Zen Peacemakers International (ZPI) has a core group of people who live by vow - Zen Peacemakers Order (ZPO). I was surprised and fortunate to be invited to join the first cohort of the ZPO's two year "Formation Course". We are fast heading towards the end of year two. The methods used by ZPO draw from more traditions than Zen, sometimes this may be confusing, but it generally gets clearer as we go on. They have some lovely clever and compassionate teachers. We meet once a week on Fridays.

I am not advertising an alternative to Treeleaf. ZPI and ZPO position themselves in support of Zen Centres, not in competition with them.

Whilst ZPO may not be everyone's cup of tea, I have found some new ways to operate, new ways to approach life, through this course, and for that I am very grateful. The second cohort will start soon.

If this is all news to you, or if you are looking for a place to be challenged or to deepen your practice through lively discussion in Zoom, please consider finding out more about ZPO. It could be a lovely enhancement to your existing practice.

Bernie Glassman started a wonderful organization in the Peacemakers Order.

Thank you fortheinformation, Seiko. ZPO is a wonderful organization. I wasn't aware of the Formations cohort. I will have to investigate further. Bernie was a man of many talents and took the practice of engaged Buddhism very seriously, even as a clown (The Order of Disorder). I have hoped to some day participate in one of their Bearing Witness retreats.

The name given to me at Jukai was actually something Bernie started. Angyo, which means peacemaker, was a name which members of the Zen Peacemaker Order received when they were installed in the Order. My first teacher was ordained by Bernie and has continued the tradition.

I have always felt a very strong kinship with Glassman Roshi and the work that he did... and the work that continues to be done.
