    FSR decorum

Hi! I’m new here. Been sitting zazen for a couple weeks on my own. Looking to join FSR soon. Quick question on decorum: when I join FSR, do I bow to the camera, my zafu, the wall, all of the above? And what about when exiting the FSR? Any other tips?

First, have you checked the instructions here?

Might have to scroll down to find them, depending on your device.

Yes, I was just wondering if it matters what the target of my gassho is. Don’t want to commit any gassho faux pas 😊🙏

        Hello!

The “proper” way is: join room and bow, regardless of who or if anyone is there ( truly, the room is always full [emoji1] )
Once that is done you continue with the usual zazen ritual. For zazen, we bow to cushion, fluff the cushion, stand and bow to it again, turn clockwise and bow in the opposite direction. Then, either turn clockwise again and sit on your zafu, or sit directly on it facing the room and while holding it with your left hand you turn clockwise pushing yourself with the right hand while sitting on the zafu. Once you’re facing the wall, settle nicely into your posture by swaying a few times from side to side. After that, bow again in gassho and sit. At the end, you do all of the above again in reversed order.
If anyone comes into the room while you sit, there’s no need to stop and bow to them or check who it is. So, regarding the room: always bow when entering and leaving, even if alone in there, keep microphone muted and that’s all. [emoji3526]

I hope this helps [emoji1] (sorry I ran long, everyone.. needed more words [emoji1] )

            Hi

I am Buddha, and you are Buddha, and Buddha is Buddha,I think.
This is my opinion, because of chapter Shobo Genzo Bussho.

So meaning of Gassho and bow is greeting, from Buddha to Buddha.
            Say good morning,and,,,so on...

We bow to our fellows, we bow to the place we sit, we bow to the world ...

So, can there be a right or wrong direction for such bows? Bow to any and all.

Traditionally, we Gassho when entering the sitting room, bow toward our Zafu cushion for sitting (which is also greeted in Gassho by the two people on either side), then turn and Gassho in the other direction to the rest of the room, then sit.

The camera changes nothing about that. However, if ya wish to add an extra Gassho to the folks on the other side of the camera ... could it hurt?

Thanks everyone! I definitely need to practice this ritual a few times. But I’m assuming practicing the practice IS the practice. So that’s good. 😊🙏
