                Hi Jundo,
as you might remember I just joined TreeLeaf. It would be great to join you also for the reading of this book. Please, can you tell me:

1- if I am too late to request the book and still read it with you guys? I live in Kenya and it will take 10 days min to get it

2- where/how do you meet to discuss about its reading

thanks for this. My best greetings from green Nairobi. Fil

welp I went back and forth on whether or not id actively participate this time around in the book club as often I'm a bit daft
That being said I really did enjoy reading the last book for the up coming Jukai and the discussion etc. So I decided to jump in and I have my copy of this book on order.

                    Delivery estimate: January 22, 2009 - January 23, 2009
                    Hope that soon enough ops:

Also while I was at it I picked up a few other items to add to my reading list:

Gateless Barrier: Zen Comments on the Mumonkan by Zenkai Shibayama
A Heart To Heart Chat On Buddhism With Old Master Gudo (by some familiar name )

and about a month or so ago i broke down and got all 4 books of Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation of Master Dogen's Shobogenzo.
(interestingly enough 1st book-as mentioned in another thread) is online and free for the reading - D'OH-well)
Should keep me busy for a good while!

                          Hi.

The whole shobogenzo is downloadable here for free...
                          http://www.shastaabbey.org/shobogenzo1.htm
It's not an bad translation, and it makes reading nishijinma's translation so much more...

                            Hi,

I am happy to mention that ...

Vol. 1 & 2 of the Nishijima-Cross Shobogenzo is now available for free download (here):

                            http://www.numatacenter.com/default.aspx?MPID=81

Vol 3 & 4 are soon to follow.

I still prefer them to the Shasta Abbey version ... but I am biased.

                                Hi Fugen
Yes! I have downloaded and printed the Shasta abbey translation some time ago and read quite a bit of it. I Decided I wanted get a couple or 3 translations on the go. That in mind I decided to grab the Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation as well as follow up with recent translations by Mike Cross himself as he works away at them. Slow going but worth it to me. When reading any translation there is always a slight slant put on by the translator to a degree (in some cases due to the number of meanings for just one word). Just like I put my on slant on every thing I've read (thus i say that the Shasta abbey version seemed a bit flowery in comparison to another translation...doesn't make it so.)

That in mind I decided to grab the Gudo Nishijima Roshi/Chodo Cross translation as well as follow up with recent translations by Cross himself as he works away at them.

Always good to get some perspective. Anywho I'm putting my likes and dislikes in here but truth of the matter is Even if I was sitting with Dogen himself and could speak the language I'm sure id ass it up and have to ask for him to re word it - bring it down a level for me. Since I can't ask him to do that I'll just read what I can and take from it what i can. then do it all again.

Hmmm I have a lot of reading to do ops:
