Greatest Hits #7: Tōhoku earthquake and Fukushima disaster

Greatest Hits: Tōhoku earthquake and Fukushima disaster

Sometimes, major world events come closer than we might like and in March 2011 the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fukush...clear_disaster), just over one hundred miles (176 km) from Tsukuba. Bags were packed in case of a core breach at Fukushima and Mina and Leon left on March 13 to stay with relatives some distance away as a precaution.

Jundo and the cat remained with the aftershocks of the earthquake, keeping in touch with his nuclear physicist friend in Italy for up-to-date advice. On March 15 he and experts advised that Leon should probably not return to Tsukuba for several weeks, so Jundo decided to go and be with his family, taking us with him.

The following thread follows events as they unfolded with input from the concerned sangha who also asked after Taigu, who was a Treeleaf teacher at the time, and Nishijima Roshi:

The March 19 Zazenkai took place in a room in Osaka: (https://www.treeleaf.org/forums/show...i-At-This-Time) but had returned to the home Zendo in Tsukuba by the following week: https://www.treeleaf.org/forums/show...ACK-IN-TSUKUBA.
This Sit-a-long was recorded on Jundo’s return to Tsukuba on March 24: https://www.treeleaf.org/forums/show...To-Run-To-Baby

Coincidentally, some ten years on, this month’s four-hour Zazenkai featured a brief series of earthquake shocks from this point on:

Although we would like the earth under our feet to remain firm and stable, sometimes this is not so. We sit with it when we can, and leave if we must. As far as Zen sanghas go, Treeleaf is at least one we can carry with us.
