Re: Mark Your Calendar: ROHATSU/JUKAI RETREAT in DECEMBER!!

I can try for that weekend, but it is right at the end of the semester when things tend to be pretty crazy busy. If it doesn't work then, a few weekends later I expect to be completely free so could do the recorded version. My preference would be to do it live, however, as it will be more motivating knowing the simultaneity of it with everyone else. Of course, this is just an empty idea in my head I need to drop.

Perhaps it could be helpful for those of us unable to do it at the live time to list when we will be doing it . That way, those of us sitting later can know that they are sitting with others still. We do take refuge in the sangha, after all

        Very nice suggestion, Jen.

I will also make sure we have a special thread set up where people can note that they have completed sitting the retreat, whether then 'now' or at a later 'now' (it will always be 'now' whenever folks sit) and can write about their experiences.

        See you then now.

          Dear all,
I do not know that I will be able to set aside 6/7 December either due to work travel. I will probably have to sit for two days during that following week. I think the suggestion of posting when people will be sitting so we "can take refuge in the sangha" is an excellent one....

Jen's suggestion is very good. Doing it that way would take some pressure off feeling a NEED to do it 12/6-7, which would seem to almost defeat the purpose of the retreat in the first place.

Yes ... but providing the sitting gets sat.

Everyone should sit retreats from time to time (2 days is a short retreat), and not wait too long. So, even if that weekend is not possible, sit the retreat very soon after. Do not procrastinate!

              Gassho, J

PS - By the way, some folks have written to ask if another retreat can be sat in place of ours. Yes, for sure. So long as some sitting gets sat!

Of course, I would love to see as many Treeleafers as possible join in our December sitting. Please try. :P

                Hello Jundo and all,

I think incorporating kid duty in the retreat is a great idea. I won't be able to do the live retreat, but since both my children are in school, and my husband works day shift...I'm going to do my retreat on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 8,9. I will have to get my kids off the bus (and on the bus in the mornings) in the afternoons, but then only have an hour until my hubby would be home to take over. I usually spend that hour hearing about my kids' days and doing homework. I think that could be considered an hour of Samu, Jundo please let me know if that is okay. I have been teaching my children about sitting zazen, so maybe I could have them sit with me for like 5 minutes.

Jenny - Thank you for your suggestion! I too think it is a very good idea to know when others will be sitting.

I am really looking forward to this retreat.

Take care all and have a great week,
                Kelly

Thanks Jundo, I hope to do the live retreat but will need to confirm nearer the time if that's ok?
Anyone else have nervous butterfly in the stomach feeling?

                  take care,

                    Hi Kelly,

It absolutely is 'Samu', although whether it is or not truly depends on you:

If you teach and listen to your kids with stillness amid the chaos, achieving and accomplishing what needs to be done but with no thought of achievement (that is "non-achievement"), being present in that moment with you kids with no thought that you should be or would rather be doing something else ...

                    ... that's Samu.

Yes, you can use such activities as your "Samu" periods for the retreat. Also, if you are doing the recorded version, there will be great flexibility to do the "Samu" when you need to.

                      Hello all,

Jundo, thank you for your reply. Most days I try to be mindful at these times and enjoy hearing about my boys' day at school. I will make an extra effort to be still during this time of my retreat.

Thank you for allowing us this flexibility!

                      Gassho,

for those folks who don't have family/work commitments, it is also possible to sit more than 2 days, right? -- would anyone else be interested in doing that? -- say 4/5 days? -- when the time comes, we could block it out on the zen hall scheduler, though i cant use the webcam during the retreat, no internet where i'd be going

just a word of encouragement -- its not going to be impossibly difficult, just difficult -- i've seen very ordinary people do retreats of much greater length, and they survived -- having a sangha makes it possible -- the silent support is essential -- alone i'm done in a few days, but with others, even in cyberspace, i can go much longer

one improvement i'd suggest for the scheduler would be the option to add more names to a time slot -- so people could record their intent to join others who are sitting at that time -- more group sitting

                          Hey Bob,

I don't have unlimited time but more than most! I probably would sit some extra times after my two day retreat is over if I know other people are doing theirs. And I agree it would be great if more than one person could sign up at a time with the scheduler. I'm really going to try and sit using the zendo again either tomorrow or next week.

scott -- ron and i were just talking about the same thing, using the zen hall more

as far as the retreat, i'm definitely going to do an extended one -- i'll be gone from 11/25 til 12/3, with one of my kids, but you can just assume that as long as you want to sit, i'll be sitting, unless you want to go more than a week, -- its best if i extend the tail end, rather than the beginning, as i'll be returning home to my wife on the third, should really hang out together before the retreat

one cool thing is that if you sit til, say, 9 pm, it will only be 7 here -- i really poop out in the evening -- but i'm good in the a.m.

And to all Treeleafers, remember that not just us, but thousands of people will be sitting rohatsu sesshin with us, all over the world, as we will be sitting with them, all together, no separation (as Jundo would say).

It would get great for me if the schedule could be posted on treeleaf. Although I can get another sangha's retreat schedule and use that.

I am thinking of going to rohatsu at Jikoji in California, USA. But I also want to do a private retreat at home, perhaps before as preparation. It is very stressful for me to be in a group, even at a sesshin, so I have to plan this.

                              gassho,

I am working on the exact sitting schedule now, but they will be full days ... before sunrise (or thereabouts) to late after sundown on December 6 and 7.
