Does anyone know if there are any places where I could get an english copy of the Eihei Shingi (which as far as I understand, Dogens Instructions for the Cook are just one part of?) I see a copy on amazon, though it's over 60 dollars which leads me to believe that it's out of print... Are there any digital copies available?
I would not rely on the Jiyu Kennett Roshi translations, she tended to the very "King James" in her style sometimes, and embellished quite a bit. The Taigen Leighton/Okumura is much more reliable.
I would purchase a copy if you can, and you can afford, and here are some options:
Also, if you truly cannot afford a copy, or while you are waiting for delivery of a purchased copy, it is available online. However, please only use if you cannot otherwise purchase, or will use a small bit only for study, as we do not want to just take without need. Also, you can request from a library, and use the following while waiting for arrival! (I think we still have public libraries. )
Now, as to Dogen's Tenzo Kyokun, "Instructions for the Cook" (not to be confused with a book by Bernie Glassman or a film about Ed Brown of the same names), I highly highly recommend this commentary by Uchiyama Roshi as one of the best "Zen books" of all timeless time:

Thank you! And yes I'm actually in the middle of reading Uchiyama Roshi's book. And ya I did notice Jiyu Kennet tended to have a bit of a "King James" vibe as you put it. Read a bit of her stuff before coming to treeleaf.
Also in regards to the library, not something I had thought of... though in regards to books... they're definitely not what they used to be, Libraries seem to be shifting to other focuses in recent years (at least that's what I've noticed) I remember being shocked when I first when to college, the library had 3 floors, but most of the shelves were completely empty.
