    The Four Elements of Sociability

    The four elements of sociability comprise the 94th Gate of Dharma Illumination and are the topic of my Blog today.

    The four elements are (per Ch. 45, Vol III, Shobogenzo):

    dāna, free giving;
    priya-ākhyāna, kind speech;
    artha-carya, helpful conduct and
    samāna-arthatā, identity of purpose, or cooperation

    Can you think of anything more appropriate than this to be discussing this week after the latest inhumane acts of violence. I've recently been introducing Loving Kindness Practice to my meditation groups and now include it in our format. Last week one member blurted out in a very Aha moment/ revelationary way, " Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone learned to do this practice." Which is something I've been thinking for a long time now.
    Another hope of mine is that more people knew and practiced the Four Abodes meditations that Joan Halifax and Sharon Saltzberg teach at Upaya.
    The Abodes comprise of Loving Kindness, Compassion, Shared Joy and Equanimity. In my opinion, it's well worth the time looking into each and all of these seven elements again to merit the deepening of your Dharma practice.

          Thank you so much Shokai. I wondered if you could explain a bit more about the format you've adopted and whether there are links to Joan and Sharon's teachings. I've loved receiving your blog updates in my mail, but just recently I noticed they have stopped, I'll ask advice in the techno thread.
          Thank you for all that you do.

            Actually I just found this really helpful series from Joan Halifax, her words really resonate with our Metta and Tonglen practices too. I'm struggling with grief at the moment and found real balm in the way Joan expresses these words. https://gratefulness.org/resource/bo...s-of-the-mind/

                          @Shokai - "page not found" , sorry

                          As amazing as it is, these heavenly abodes exist within, without and in all directions, regardless of effort or time.

                          Its beautiful for these to be included, Shokai thankyou from the bottom of my heart for all you have done with the practice of the Gates. ==> It has helped me so much
