Wish we could at least keep the manji for maps here in Japan. It's an actual Japanese kanji.卍 It means ten thousand and its on the
10,000 yen bill as the shortened version 万. It also means all like in the ekou 万邦. Banning someones alphabet character and trying to get them to stop using it because someone misappropriated it is kind of silly imo.
I think its silly to change for foreigners when its been well known as a symbol of Buddhism for more than a thousand years in Japan.

Go to any old temple or graveyard and you'll see it all over.

I think it is an admirable attempt to educate people on the roots of the symbol and to point out that it hasn't always meant what it now means to many. It is understandable however that many may not interpret it in this way.
The swastika is one of the most recognisable symbols of NAZI Germany; and trying to make people view it in another light is not only very, very unlikely, it is also I believe a bad idea.
If this symbol reminds people of the atrocities committed by the NAZIs then it maintaining that meaning to many is a good thing. With the amount of distasteful and often grotesque holocaust "humour" in entertainment these days, subduing the feelings of horror, sorrow and disgust felt by many at the sight of this symbol would be just another step towards an apathetic view of it as "just another thing that happened a long time ago."
Apathy towards an event like the holocaust just increases the chance of something like it happening again.

Also as stated by others, there are plenty of Buddhist symbols to be used. I am not suggesting removing any that already exist. In the case of maps and the like though, I have seen maps where there are swastikas to mark temples but also maps where a dharma wheel is used as the marking, both get the point across.
