    John Cage on emotions

I am willing to have emotions, but without being a slave to them.

John Cage led an extremely interesting life. I’d recommend Where the Heart Beats by Kay Larson—an exhaustive biography of Cage and his approach to art and Zen—to anyone with an interest in music, Zen, or both. Fantastic read.

My aunt used to dance with Merce Cunningham. She's currently a nun with a Tibetan order. I was first exposed to avant-garde NY when I was 10. When I first became interested in Buddhism at 15 John Cage left a deep impression on me. There's a wonderful book of interviews with him called Conversations With Cage. He talks about Zen a lot in it.
