    Portraying Falsehood - What's In AName ?

I've been thinking about posting this question for a number of months now, as its something that's been mildly niggling me off and on.

This is a question of whether my forum username gives a false impression ?

When I joined Treeleaf nearly 11 months ago, I knew nothing of Dharma names or Jukai and having seen users with Japanese names I decided to use the name of the martial arts school I ran Seishin-Do. There was a very good reason for the choice and although it was based on a very young Google Translate, it stood for The Way of The Heart Soul Mind Body Spirit - I'm sure Jundo would make a far more accurate translation! Anyway it stood for my approach to both my training and then my teaching of Wado Ryu karate and other disciplines. It was how I applied myself and also what i asked of my students. It seemed appropriate for my return to Zen.

During last years Ango and Jukai I started having doubts about the message the name might give. Again these thoughts arose when discussing " Fake It 'til Make It " earlier this year, I even touched on the subject in a Pm to Jundo. Now as my Insight timer tells me I've been sitting for nearly 320 days my thoughts have returned to Jukai - whether I partake this year is a subject for another day - but it raises the question :

Does my username give the impression that I have received Jukai, which I have not ?
I would be interested in what folks think, especially those who have joined the Sangha since last September.

Given the precepts of Right Words, Deeds, Thoughts etc I just feel the name is possibly inappropriate.

Might be making a mountain out of a molehill, especially as most folk have more serious things to worry about.

So I'll sign of as usual.

      Hi Toby

My martial arts teacher always told me to play the man and not the belt. As far as I am concerned, we are all equal here whether we have undergone jukai or not.

Similar to you, I chose a username that could be misinterpreted when I joined here since I did not know of the customs of naming and jukai. I'm not sure it matters terribly much just as long as we don't pretend to be something we are not.

@Jundo - how wise and appropriate. Thank you. The jester in me would refer you to the old Poison song, Every Rose Has A Thorn but that's just how it is.

@ Kokuu - Thank you. I can see it would be an easy "mistake" to make when knowing so little. So it wasn't just me. And yes be yourself are we not all white belts.
I am what I am, never pretend to be owt else otherwise the only fool I'm fooling is this old fool.

Thank you both for your teaching.

        Humbly

Yes. In my interpretation, the Jukai Ceremony is simply a Celebration of how we are seeking to live now, being gentle toward self and others (not two, by the way) and to embody this Buddhist Path. The Ceremony itself works no magic, and it certainly does not mark "real Buddhists" from others walking such Path.

I used a pseudonym here until Jukai. I usually use a pseudonym on internet forums. I need my real name to be internet-searchable and point to my business. I never read too much meaning into others' usernames.

I also agree ... a name is just a name. How you are and they way you interact with people around you is whats important. =)

                Hi Toby,

I have never thought of that. But hey, it shouldn't be an issue. You are what you are and we care about you for that. That's all.

As a matter of fact Seishin-do is super cool. If you ask me, I would stick with it.

There's no reason to worry about your name. I can see why you might think so, but really, there are a lot of different approaches to names here.

My real name is G-String but it was changed to Jishin to give me anonymity. Nobody cares. Really.

I did think you had received Jukai. I was a bit confused you going by Toby as well as having another name. Makes sense now. Both great names.

I actually feel a bit uncomfortable having my real name and photo on here because of privacy and the fact that certain people could possibly find me. I often don't share as much as I might because of that. I actually have 2 Buddhist names from other teachers but I don't use them...they always felt a bit too grand for me. Probably low self-esteem!
