The little talk during today's Zazenkai (from about 56:10 mark) was on this "I don't know."
Was it a good talk? I really really don't know.
Sometimes it is said the the Rinzai folks in Koan Introspection Zazen have to develop a "Great Doubt" after which they break through to a knowing Great Trust. I sometimes say that Soto folks in Shikantaza sit in Great Trust, even when we sometimes might doubt.

And, now that my laptop is fixed, I look forward to joining in in the weekly Zazenkai.

Thank you Paul, for your interesting comments on your experience. I recall Charlotte Joko Beck writing about the early stages of sitting and observing that it often gets worse before it gets better, although of course there is no goal or attainment and 'Mara' can haunt the mind of the most experienced in practice. I think by 'it' she meant the torment of mind that comes from exposing the ego with all its attachments and suffering, laid bare by thoughts as we fleetingly acknowledge and let them pass. She calls it the 'baseboard', I believe. Or at least that's my understanding and my experience, although it may well be flawed. Best wishes with your practice.
