    Early morning weekday zazen

    Dear all,

Over the last few years my practice has developed into an early morning affair. I usually sit for 15-20 minutes from about 0430. Being in Japan, my routine and the time difference doesn’t easily allow me to attend existing meetings.

So, I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a regular slot of Zazen, between 0430
and 0500 Japan time, or perhaps a little later, on weekdays?

No bells and whistles, no chanting (family is asleep), just entering the room, Gassho, and sitting for the agreed time.

Anyone who this might suit, please drop me a message and perhaps we can see about making it a regular thing.

Lovely. If you are sure that it will be a regular happening, and you wish, we can list it among our member Zazenkai on the calendar.

    Thank you for sitting.

I’m sitting around that time anyway, I’d just have to be a bit more strict about the time.

The time window can manage is about half an hour between 0430 and 0530. If one or the other garners interest I’m thinking a 25-30 minute sit.

Lets see if it gets any takers before putting it on the calendar.

Am I correct that that would be 6pm est?

Checking online the time difference between JST and EST is -14 hours, so 0500 here would be 1500 there.

I get just as confused. It’s always worth triple checking.

So 0500 Monday for me is 1500 the previous Sunday EST.

If that works for you then shall we get it set up on the calendar?

Yes, please. I am hoping to deepen my practice, and this is perfect for me.

I'll just drop in that Myojin is an excellent Zen friend to have and sit with. You can't go wrong sittin' with Myo!

I feel you on the different time zone Myo-jin , but I'll still be sleeping at 3:30am (I'm an hour behind you). My morning sit starts sometime around 7:45am, so I try to pop in on the EK SSR sits when the timing works out as it's around when I stop teaching classes

We have to work with what we’ve got, and in my case having a nearly 3-year old in the house mean that through the night into early morning is the only time I can more or less guarantee a half hour where I’m not needed for something.

It helps that I’ve always preferred morning practice, and as I’ve gotten older I find I usually get up before dawn. Hopefully the added timeslot will be useful for others. I’ll be making a notice about it this afternoon.

Thank you, Myo-jin, for offering this sit. I really enjoyed it! The time you’ve chosen is about half an hour after my usual evening zazen, so it gives me the opportunity to continue and sit together with you.
Barring the unexpected, I will be there regularly.

Maybe one day for me, but I'm so darned solar-based that if the sun ain't up, neither am I

Personally, I find my best sit is also in the morning, right after a coffee and a wash.

Myojin, as a fellow member living in Japan, I have also been struggling with the time zones. An early-morning Japan Zazen would be greatly welcomed.
