Looking into the Lotus Sutra

Nichiren spoke against a lot of things ... and much of Buddhism ... except Nichiren! He was something of the Buddhist Martin Luther, fire and brimstone, his way or the highway to hell. He proclaimed himself Buddha in the world too ...

Here is a rather hipster and too cynical version of Nichiren's life and attitude toward other sects of Buddhism. (I don't like some of the language and the tone, but it is the only video I have been able to find on the life of Nichiren not made by Nichiren Buddhist groups, so a bit less praising of Nichiren than all those.)

The video is so true. I have a cousin who was the Nichiren shoshu follower. And yes when he brought me to his temple, I was disturbed by how militant Nichiren's writing.
But chanting Daimoku I think is a good practice. It is just like by chanting the Title of the Sutra, we are reminded with the contain of the Sutra. Even my cousin said just Daimoku is enough. I argued to him that his way of thinking is just like when we bought bread, we take the packaging, but throw away the bread.
Even Chanting Daimoku is good practice, sometimes I do it too, because it reminds me to Shakyamuni Buddha. But still, I am not a fan of Nichiren.
But compare to Zazen, for me in Zazen we are also not only chant, but here we are practicing and embodying the Lotus Sutra with our flesh sitting upright.
