Hey Bob!
This is the section that was used last year.
In September we begin with Ango. The Sangha members make an effort to a little more monastic for a three month period
In this time, folks that wish to study and take the precepts begin going through the info that is in this section one bit at a time. Its a really lovely time, I think you would really enjoy it.
These folks will also begin the process of sewing a rakusu individually and online in the live sewing groups.
Jukai (the vow ceremony) happens in January where you would be given a dharma name.
Can someone direct me to your version of the lay vows, precepts? The ethical trainings?
Gasshos.
Hi Bob,
Here are our Precept reflections from last fall. Of course, we seek to live guided by the Precepts all the time! In my book, the most important thing is -not- the ceremony itself (held each January), which alone works no magic by itself. The ceremony is just a celebration and affirmation of our seeking to live gently, and to learn from the Buddhist teachings, right now and each day. The ceremony just celebrates and confirms that fact. More important is that you do your best, today, to live gently in a way helpful and healthy to oneself and others (who are "not two," by the way), avoiding harm such as excess desires, anger, violence, jealousy, ugly speech and the like. That is the real Jukai, undertaking the Precepts, each day.
The wording we have in our Ceremony is this, although in our reflections, I like to let folks come to their own understandings of what each Precept and Vow means ...
The Three Devotions
Respectful devotion to Buddha, Respectful devotion to Dharma, Respectful devotion to Sangha.
Devotion to Buddha, the Guiding One; Devotion to Dharma, the Reality & Teaching; Devotion to Sangha, the Embracing Community.
Sincere devotion to Buddha, Sincere devotion to Dharma, Sincere devotion to Sangha.
The Three Pure & Universal Precepts
No.1: To seek as you can, in this body and life, to avoid doing harm
No.2: To seek as you can, in this body and life, to live in a healthful and helping way, doing good
No.3: To seek as you can, in this body and life, to live for the benefit of all Sentient Beings
The Ten Fundamental Precepts
I. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from the killing of life
II. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to live in generosity and refrain from taking that which is not given
III. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from misusing sexuality and all desire
IV. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from false and malicious speech
V. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from intoxication in its many forms
VI. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from unconstructively criticizing the errors and faults of others
VII. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from praising oneself and judging others
VIII. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from stinginess in bestowing the Buddhist Teachings and all precious things
IX. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from all anger
X. To seek as you can, in this body and life, to refrain from disparaging the Three Treasures, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha
.
We also have the Verse of Atonement and Four Vows:
VERSE OF ATONEMENT
EVERYONE TOGETHER:
All harmful acts, words and thoughts, ever committed by me since of old,
On account of beginningless greed, anger and ignorance,
Born of my body, mouth and mind,
Now I atone for them all ~ ~ ~ THE FOUR VOWS
EVERYONE TOGETHER:
(To be chanted 3x - moderate, louder and whisper)
To save all sentient beings, though beings numberless
To transform all delusions, though delusions inexhaustible
To perceive Reality, though Reality is boundless
To attain the Enlightened Way, a Way non-attainable
