Welcome to Zen 'Non-Calligraphy'
Here, I will occasionally be posting prompts that won't be unlike some exercises you might have done in high school art class, but we will be approaching them with lightness, mindfulness, and Big Mind.
Everyone is welcome to participate and show their work, or adapt the work as feels appropriate in the moment. Everyone is also free to suggest prompts that they come across that seem to be a good fit for what we are doing here.
Remember, there are very few rules about how we will be approaching these prompts. Perfection is highly discouraged. What we are going for here is more ease of hand and spirit as we allow the work to come out of the medium, rather than deciding beforehand how the medium is going to work for us.
In keeping with the usual aesthetic of Zen art, I will suggest activities that can be mostly done with black ink on white paper. However, for any of these prompts, you may use any medium you have available. Our first prompt, that I will post soon, is done with a thin black pen on lined paper, so again, there aren't any rules when it comes to the materials. You can make a drawing in sand on the beach, if it strikes you. You can use colors, or food, or rocks. Whatever you like. The more natural you feel while doing it, the better. We aren't trying to impress anyone here-- it's about simply allowing something to be created by your hands.
Thank you for joining me.
