    ARTS: Buddhist Pop

    Hey everyone,
So I was playing music with a buddy of mine this morning and one of the songs we did was Pearl Jam’s Just Breath and I thought to myself what a great Buddhist pop/rock song. My wife is driving us around town doing grocery shopping for the week while my son snoozes in the car so I am making a Buddhist Pop/Rock playlist and wondered if anyone would like to join in. So far my list is:

    Just Breath - Pearl Jam
    Everything Zen - Bush
    Imagine - John Lennon
Time in a Bottle - Jim Croce
Life on Mars - David Bowie
    Pardon Me - Incubus
    What it’s Like - Everlast
You Can’t Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
In My Life - The Beatles
    Carry On - Angra
House of the Rising Sun -The Animals
    Samsara - Itto
    Imagination - Just an Illusion

What would you add to the list?

    St/lah
    Gassho,
    Brett

HA! thanks for this! I'm thinking we could actually create playlists on Spotify or Apple Music, whatever folks use, and add them to the post and then update as suggestions might come in!

My first suggestion is Rare Form - Being Time (literally based off of Dogen Zenji's Uji )

Great addition Bion, really enjoyed that song.

I have created the playlist on Spotify search for “Buddhist Pop/Rock” to find it.

I don't know if it qualifies, but Carry On from Angra feels kind of Buddhist to me.

In my learning the guitar (I have all the main chords, although I still need to fake F and some of the Bs) ... I now do a dandy House of the Rising Sun ...

... which is, I tell you, a teaching on Karma and Samsara.

Of course, every song is a "Buddhist Song" when heard with wisdom and compassion.

Nice one, also one of the first songs I learned on guitar.

80s pop represents with Imagination 'Just an Illusion'!

                          (Could it be that)

Do you know about Dharma, the Taiwanese Buddhist Metal bands?

Japan has the Vowz Band ...

This song is "Somosan Seppa" ... In a Zen Mondo or Hossenshiki "Dharma Combat," "Somosan" is used to refer to the person asking the question, and it means something like "what's up!?" In response to "Somosan," it is common for the person being asked to respond with "Seppa" (meaning something like, "disruption.") The lyrics of the rest of the song say things like "The Super Super Question, Life, this World, is ALL a Zen Mondo" "Saving All Sentient Beings, Ya know" and "If you meet the Buddha, Kill the Buddha; If you meet Death, Kill Death," "If your finger points at the moon, cut it off and let it fall," "Put your hands together, What's the Sound of One Hand Clapping?" At points, they pick up a fortune telling box (pulling out the fortune sticks), and a cocktail mixer (this is the house band of the Vowz Bar, the monk run bar in Tokyo, see below). The guy in white is a lay pilgrim, and the woman is (I think, subject to further research) a Dakini in a Diadem Crown (a Hindu Goddess incorporated into Buddhism):

They are associated with the Vowz Bar in Tokyo ... (How can priests manage a bar, given our Precepts and all? The basic idea is that one goes to where the suffering people are to reach the suffering people, and that the Mahayana Precepts can thus be kept in spirit (and spirits) if to save Sentient Beings. Japanese Buddhism is rather, shall we say, open minded ... ) ...

Vowz Bar is the ideal place for a unique night out in Shinjuku. Visit this bar run by monks to enjoy Buddhism-inspired cocktails, traditional vegan temple food, and learning about the most prominent religion in Japan in a welcoming environment.

More Vowz Band (They are not all Zen priests, by the way, and the one fellow in the Wagesa, round Kesa, is Pure Land) ... set sometime in the future, in a dystopian world (probably right after somebody tried my Buddhist crispr idea ), this one says "Everything is Empty, Just a Temporary Form ... there is nothing that does not change ... Give voice to the Perfection of Wisdom, you'll probably get it ... The only important things is NAMU! ... So, AWAKEN! OPEN YOUR EYES! Let's get liberated (GEDATSU) from this world by this rhythm, GET GEDATSU!" The rap continues the theme that all is empty, so lets not get sucked into the Bonnos (Mental Obstructions, Desires, Illusions) ...
