    [ARTS] Junsho's Buddhist Sculptures

    Hi Sangha,

    Just would like to share to you this art that I did. I started to experiment sculpture recently, so after 2 or 3 little statues I decided to go big. This is the result. ( I posted here once there is no category for sculpture here).

    This is Monju Bosatsu (Manjusri Boddhisatva over a lion)

        Hi Sangha,

        Being a Buddhist sculptor is one of the main paths I choose to practice. For this reason, I would like to share another sculpture I made. It is a small mask of Ucchusma or Ususama, The Impurity-Cleansing Protector of the Dharma. It is not the final artwork yet; it needs to be sanded, painted, and given a protective layer, but that's all. I hope that I can spread the Dharma to all sentient beings through these pieces of clay.

        PS Kokuu , Please, how about to create a session in the arts group called sculpture. We are orfans of a group for folks like me interested in buddhist statues.

        Gassho and deep bows.

          Ah, that is also me before morning coffee.

          Lovely, Jundo. Thank you for sharing. We should put together an online public Buddhist art show one of these days. Really, we should. Would you like to curate such a show?

          I will create a sculpture section for you now.

              That's a wonderful idea, Roshi! I'm really happy to do it. I’ve been looking for ways to contribute more to the Sangha, and anything that helps share the Dharma feels truly meaningful. Art has always been a big part of my life since I was a child, even though my career took a different path. I'm genuinely grateful for this opportunity.

              PS. Thank you for create a sculpture session

                  I will organize the ideas and put together a project proposal to help carry out this plan. Then, I will reach out to you to discuss it.

                    Hi Sangha,
                    I finally finished painting Ususama. Unfortunately, I discovered that the clay I bought to make the mask was of poor quality, and every interaction caused it to break, so I made some kind of kintsugi on the cracks. In the end, everything worked out, but I will never buy this clay again.

                    Gassho and deep bows.

                      The cracks suit Ususama,-myoo, famous for changing filth to purity. They are the Guardian at the entrance to toilets in Zen monasteries in Japan. More here:

                      ~~~
                      Here is an image of a traditional Tosu (東司, the "Eastern Hall" Toilet) in a Zen Monastery in Japan. As you can see, it has an Altar too.
                      .
                      image.png
                      .
                      The image there is Ususama-myoo (烏瑟沙摩明王, seen below at the entrance to another Tosu and bath house), also called Katokongoo, a "Wisdom King" guardian who symbolizes the virtue of purification, and is said to transform impurities. It is also said that the origin of Ususama Myo-oh is the Indian god Agni, able to burn away all impurities with fire.
                        I believe that you post by accident a different link, Roshi. This seems to be a post exclusive for priests.
                        PS. Ususama Myoo found a new home on the toilet here at home. (However, I need to keep him covered because quite scary my little son).
                        PS2. I already decided what will be the next sculpture. Kannon Boddhisatva, It will be very challenge.
