    [Neurodiverse] A little about me

Hello Neurodiverse folks of Treeleaf Sangha!

This group has been created for neurodiverse folks (and really, anyone) to share how their own neurodiversity entwines with Sōtō Zen Buddhist Practice, to create a supportive environment, and let you know that you are never alone.

Everyone is welcome in this space.

*PLEASE READ THIS - Navigating the online realm responsibly involves safeguarding your privacy and embracing common sense in your digital interactions. Remember, this space isn't a substitute for therapy nor was it created as such. While we can chat and have wonderful conversations with one another, it's crucial to prioritize your well-being and seek professional support if and when necessary. Take care of yourself, both online and offline.*

I would like to introduce myself to the group and share a little bit about myself, including my own neurodiversity.

My name is Onki. My full Dharma name is ShōDō Onki, 笑道 恩気
Laughing Way, Kindness Energy. I have been a member of Treeleaf since 2020. I received the Precepts in 2022 and received Shukke Tokudo in August 2023. I am a Priest in Training, so please take what I say with a grain of salt as I am nowhere near a place to train others.

I, myself, have a host of ailments, such as OCD, Complex PTSD, depression, anxiety, ADHD, a learning disability, memory impairment, as well as IBS and fibromyalgia.

In my experience, living as a neurodivergent, Indigenous, transman , has been interesting to say the least. I was not diagnosed until I was an adult. I didn’t know much about neurodiversity and had lots of research to do. I continue learning and discovering new ideas, accommodations, adaptive technology, neurodiverse folks’ stories, etc each and every day. I will continue learning and sharing what I have found that may help others as well.

I believe it is crucial to have a strong support system in life while managing any sort of condition, illness or diagnosis, as well as living this human existence. I have been very lucky in my life, as I have found wonderful people that love and support me in all of my endeavours including my wife, Sarah, my chosen family, friends, and the Sangha itself.

Growing up in late 80s early 90s as an neurodivergent person in Alberta Canada was not easy. I feel that the school system failed me. I struggled all throughout my educational career. It wasn’t until I went to college at the age of 31 that I was tested and diagnosed. At that time, accommodations were put in place for me in order to give me a chance to succeed. I ended up on the deans list numerous times, as well as winning an award in my profession. Had these accommodations not been put in place for me I believe there would have been no chance of me graduating. I’m thankful to all of the staff that helped me along the way.

What brought me to Treeleaf was meeting Jundo; his passion and accessible Teachings, and discovering that this Sangha is full of diversity and love no matter who you are.

Whether you are a newcomer or you have been a member with Treeleaf for any length of time, thank you for checking this group out.

May we all Practice the Way together [emoji1431][emoji3590]

A tweak here and a tweak there, and you've written my story too.

And your names are even similar! (Purely coincidence or Karmic connection)

Good to see you, Onka Anna.

        Hi Onka!

Wow! Similar names, similar neurodiverse experiences. That’s pretty cool!
