The 43rd of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate Forty-three
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

Pursuit of abundant knowledge is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we truly reflect on the form of the Dharma.

A “Dharma Gate” is a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

    Koan:
"The buddha-dharma means making a constant effort without getting anything for yourself. This is nothing that can be determined by asking, "What do I have to do?" Nevertheless, you've got to do what you've got to do, and you mustn't do what you mustn't do. When you've got to give something, give even you're own head. When you mustn't give anything, don't even give the tip of your tougue.
Practice isn't in things. It's in actions."

    - To You, Zen sayings of Kodo Sawaki, pg. 146

    Most note worthy replies :

Anything that puts light onto Dharma
    Warms and illuminates the universe.

    The Dharma takes shape
    With study
    Then we break the mold

But all of this is meaningless
Unless we taste the sweetness by
    Actually chewing and swallowing.

    Hi Shokai

Can you please explain “abundant knowledge” a bit more? My first thought is that this seems to run counter to our way where experience is valued more than the pursuit of knowledge. What I mean is that while some study is important it is more important to sit Zazen.

This says to me that rather than take your experience at face value as truth. be sure "to look it up". As Buddha is purported to have said, don't take what I say alone, test it out for yourself.
      Does that help?

So in this case pursuit of knowledge is knowledge based on our own experience and practice, correct? Makes sense. Thank you Shokai

We can only experience our own experience and Practice; ergo, you got it
