The Eighty-ninth of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    89) The Eighty-ninth Gate; The forbearance pāramitā

The forbearance pāramitā is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we abandon all anger, arrogance, flattery, and foolery, and we teach and guide living beings who have such vices. (Nishijima/Cross)

The realization of patience is a gate of realizing dharma; it lets go of all anger, pride, flattery, and amusement, and guides sentient beings who are filled with such emotions. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
    Practice the Patience Paramita
That we may be a light unto all beings

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. Comment on how Patience leads to guiding beings who have frivilous behaviours.

2 Expand on the Gate gatha.

    3. Write a new Capping Verse.

    Capping Verse:
    Unswayed by rough seas
    Dharma's ship
    Can safely carry all

      1. Patience is a powerful tool in guiding beings with frivolous behaviors because it allows us to remain calm and composed in the face of challenging situations. When we practice patience, we are better able to understand and empathize with others, making it easier for us to communicate and guide them effectively. Patience also sets an example for those who struggle with such behaviors, demonstrating that it is possible to overcome negative emotions and cultivate a more harmonious and peaceful state of mind.

      2. The Gate gatha emphasizes the importance of practicing the Patience Paramita together with all buddhas, as a collective effort to illuminate the path for all sentient beings. By engaging in this practice, we become a light that guides and supports others in their journey towards enlightenment. This shared commitment to patience reinforces the interconnectedness of all beings and reminds us that our individual efforts contribute to the greater good.

      3. New Capping Verse:

In the eye of the storm
      With patience as our compass
      Guiding hearts to calm
