The Eighty-seventh of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    87) The Eighty-seventh Gate: The dāna pāramitā

The dāna pāramitā is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it], in every instance, we cause features to be pleasant, we adorn the Buddhist land, and we teach and guide stingy and greedy living beings. (Nishijima/Cross)

The realization of the giving state is a gate of realizing dharma; it leads to attaining a joyful appearance each moment, embellishing the buddha land, and freeing sentient beings from greed. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
    Practice the Dana Paramita
That we may be a light unto all beings

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. How does generosity bring light unto all beings

    2. Comment on the Gate Gatha.

    3. Write a new Capping Verse

    Capping Verse:
    Our light is endless
    Why not share
    A little bit more?

    1. Generosity brings light unto all beings by creating a sense of interconnectedness and compassion. When we give freely and without expectation, we break down the barriers that separate us from others and create a sense of unity. This act of generosity also helps to alleviate suffering and bring joy to those in need, which in turn brings light to their lives. By practicing the dana paramita, we become a light unto all beings.

    2. The Gate Gatha is a powerful reminder of the importance of practicing generosity in our daily lives. By practicing the dana paramita together with all buddhas, we can become a source of light and compassion for all beings. It is a call to action to embody the teachings of the Buddha and share our light with others.

    3. New Capping Verse:

    In giving, we receive
    A boundless source of light
    Let us share it freely
    With all beings in sight

    —————-//////——————

    Generosity, a light so bright
That shines on all in sight
A giving heart, a selfless mind
A path to peace we find

With every act of giving done
    A brighter world is spun
We break down walls of greed and hate
    And open up the gate

    The gate of dharma illumination
    A path to liberation
With every step we take in giving
Our light shines on, forever living

May we practice the dana paramita
With all buddhas by our side
And be a light unto all beings
    In every moment, every stride

Our light is endless, boundless, pure
Why not share a little bit more?
For in the act of giving, we receive
A world of light, a world of peace

          1. How does generosity bring light unto all beings
          2. Comment on the Gate Gatha

For me it is simple. When I act generously or I see others act generously it is a reminder to think beyond my self

          I have enough
          Why not share?
