The Eightieth of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    80) The Eightieth Gate: Right Practice

Right practice is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we arrive at the far shore. (Nishijima/Cross)

Right action is a gate of realizing dharma; it leads you to the other shore. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
    Practice Right Action,
That we may attain the other shore.

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. Explain the difference between arriving or being led to?

    2. Explain why enlightenment is not garanteed ?

    3. Write a new Capping Verse.

    Capping Verse:
    Already perfect
    We practice
    For that's perfection

With right practice as our guide,
We set forth on the path with pride,
Towards the shore we hope to find,
Where all illusions are left behind.

Led by actions pure and right,
We strive to keep the dharma in sight,
    And though enlightenment's not guaranteed,
We'll never stop, we'll never concede.

For in each step we take with care,
We find the perfection already there,
And with each breath we learn to see,
The other shore within you and me.

So let us join the buddhas in song,
And practice right action all day long,
For in this gate we'll find the key,
To unlock the door to true harmony.

          Thank you Shokai

          1. Explain the difference between arriving or being led to?

Subtle difference. Really not worth trying to deconstruct or over analyze.

          2. Explain why enlightenment is not guaranteed?

Well certainly enlightenment is not guaranteed for those that don’t follow a wholesome life guided by some sense to see beyond their self.

          With no goal to attain
          We practice diligently

              Thank you, Shokai!

              1. To me, arrive has a sense of a destination that we have settled beforehand, while being led to doesn’t have this sense.

              2. Without right action, Enlightenment cannot happen, so it is not guaranteed even if we achieve deep samadhi states.

              3.
