The Seventieth of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    70) The Seventieth Gate: Effort as a Part of the State of Truth

Effort*, as a part of the state of truth, is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we become proficient in realization. (Nishijima/Cross)

Branches of making effort are a gate of realizing dharma; they perceive well. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
Practice Effort, as a part of the state of truth,
That we may become proficient in realization.

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. How does effort help us to become proficient in realization?

    2. Is becoming proficient in realization the same as perceiving well?

    3. Write a new Gate Gatha

    Capping Verse:
    Practice perfection
    And become
    What we've always been

      1. Effort is an essential aspect of the state of truth because it enables us to consistently work towards our goals and aspirations. When we make an effort to cultivate positive qualities such as compassion, wisdom, and mindfulness, we are gradually transforming ourselves into better individuals. Through effort, we can overcome obstacles and challenges that may arise on the path to realization. With perseverance, we can develop a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us, leading to a more profound realization of truth.

      2. Becoming proficient in realization and perceiving well may not be the same thing, but they are closely related. Becoming proficient in realization means that we have gained a level of understanding and wisdom that allows us to perceive reality more clearly. Perceiving well involves seeing the world as it truly is, without being clouded by our biases, preconceptions, or desires. By making effort as a part of the state of truth, we can become proficient in realization and improve our ability to perceive reality accurately.

      3. New Gate Gatha:

May we, together with all buddhas,
practice mindful action with every step,
so that our hearts and minds may be in harmony,
and our actions may be a reflection of truth.
