The Thirty-fourth of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    34) The Thirty-fourth Gate: Inhibition of self-conceit.

Inhibition of self-conceit is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] wisdom is fulfilled.(Nishijima/Cross)

Being patient* is a gate of realizing Dharma; it fulfills wisdom. (Tanahashi)

    Gate Gatha:
    May we, together with all buddhas;
Refrain from the practice of self-conceit,
That we may know true wisdom.

    Reflection Prompts:

    1. Can you explain the connection between Inhibition of self-conceit and patience?
    * Tanahashi (Treasury of the True Dharma Eye) pg 809, middle of second paragraph

    2. Given that they are related, how does that fulfill wisdom.

    3. Can this be resoled by a change to the Gatha?

    Capping Verse:
    Wisdom shines brightest
    When the clouds
    Of self disappear

      Thank you Shokai

      1. Can you explain the connection between Inhibition of self-conceit and patience?

Only that I can see how they both one their own work to fulfill wisdom.

      2. Given that they are related, how does that fulfill wisdom.

Maybe by learning to be patient with myself I can learn to let my self-conceit go. I don’t know… maybe I am stretching for this one.

I’ll be interested in reading other people’s thoughts on this Gate

Thank you, Shokai, for bringing us this Gate.

        1. Can you explain the connection between Inhibition of self-conceit and patience?
I also have some difficulty seen the connection here; the translations seem to be very different from each other. Perhaps inhibition of self-conceit leads to not wanting things right away, the way the self wants it, and, so, can be related to patience.

        2. Given that they are related, how does that fulfill wisdom.
By allowing us to flow with the stream of Reality instead of fighting in order to appease our ego/self.

        3. Can this be resolved by a change to the Gatha?
May we, together with all Buddhas,
        Inhibit self-conceit and practice patience,
So that wisdom shines in the mirror of the Mind.
