The 83rd of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate Eighty-three
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

The bodhi-mind is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we are not separated from the Three Treasures.

Bodhi-mind ( bodhicitta ) : Awakened mind. way-seeking mind, the will to the truth.

By “Dharma Gate”, We mean a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

Koan: "Bodhicitta is a spontaneous wish to attain enlightenment motivated by great compassion for all sentient beings, accompanied by a falling away of the attachment to the illusion of an inherently existing self. The mind of great compassion and bodhicitta motivates one to attain enlightenment as quickly as possible and benefit infinite sentient beings through their emanations and other skillful means. Bodhicitta is a felt need to replace others' suffering with bliss. Since the ultimate end of suffering is nirvana, bodhicitta necessarily involves a motivation to help others to awaken.A person who has a spontaneous realization or motivation of bodhicitta is called a bodhisattva."

    If we can perceive
That all the Dharma is one
How far are we from Buddha-Dharma-Sangha?

    This mind and Buddha's
    Both awake
    But this one takes naps.

A couple of readings, if I may, that have impacted my thinking lately.

Our nature is the mind. And the mind is our nature. This nature is the same as the mind of all buddhas. Buddhism of the past and future only transmit this mind. Beyond this mind there's no Buddha anywhere. But deluded people don't realize that their own mind is the Buddha. They keep searching outside. They never stop invoking Buddhas or worshiping Buddhas and wondering Where is the buddha? Don't indulge in such illusions. Just know your mind. Beyond your mind there's no other buddha. The sutras say, "everything that has form is an illusion." They also say, "wherever you are, there's a buddha." Your mind is the buddha. Don't use a buddha to worship a buddha.

The whole world reels with the hustle and bustle of delivering gifts
Only my thatch hurt remains peaceful and calm
What kind of things can I offer the Buddha?
One stick of incense, one period of meditation.

The two of these come together in an interesting way. The thought of "What gift do I give to show respect to the Buddha?" and the realization that the buddha I am showing respect to is myself. How do I treat myself with the compassion and respect that I show the Buddha? Why do I not offer the same olive branch to myself that I would a random passerby? How easy it is to hold a grudge against oneself.
