The 54th of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate Fifty-four
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

Mind as an abode of mindfulness is a gate
of Dharma illumination;for [with it] we reflect that mind is like a phantom.

Mind: the totality of conscious and unconscious mental processes and activities. Abode: a place in which a person resides

By “Dharma Gate”, We mean a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

Koan: "In acient times, someone was up in a high tower and saw two monks walking by.* Two heavenly beings were sweeping the road and scattered flowers behind the monks. When the monks returned, two demons shouted and spit at the monks, and swept away their footfootsteps. The person observing this finally descended from the tower and asked the two monks what had happened. The two monks said, "when we were going we were discussing the principles of buddhas. When we were returning we were engaged in random talk. That is the reason."realizing this deeply, the two monkswere repentant and continued on their way. Listen, although this story concerns [the two monks] coarse realms of consciousness, if we examine it minutely, this is the most important aspect of people's study of the way. Why is that so? It is because when even a bit of sentimental thinking arises, external before us. If such thoughts do not arise, there can be no particular conditions. "

    What better abode

    Most note worthy replies :
    Abiding in no-thought,
    An image arises and ceases.
A ripple on a calm lake.
    When a thief rests,
    There's no stealth.

I can only know my own mind if I am in this moment. My mind is right here, right now. Oh, look... there it goes!

    Mind is the river
    We swim in
    But cannot possess

        mind is like a phantom
I like that imagery. The mind can seem so very concrete and constant but it only takes a little time with this practice to see how ephemeral the mind truly is.

        Thank you Shokai

Koan: "Buddhas' and ancestors zazen is not movement or stillness, not practice and realization, not limited to body or mind, not the opposition of delusion and enlightenment, not emptying the various conditions, not bound by various realms. How could it be connected to form, sensation, perception, mental formations or consciousness? If you practice, sensation, perception, mental formations or consciousness, that is only , sensation, perception, mental formations or consciousness, and is not the study of the way. "

There is nothing other than what is:
Yet I shiver in sudden fear
At the sight of a spider crawling on my leg,
That turned out to be a play
                of light and shadow.

                Free from likes and dislikes,
                Resistance and clinging,
                Prajna shines supreme.

Accepting all phenomena as they are, how can anything deceive us? Each things is simply what it is, blurry or not.

                All things clear or not
                Are just that
                Some are clear, some not

The four right exertions are a gate of Dharma illumination; for they eliminate all evils and realize many kinds of good.

The four right exertions : 1) to prevent bad that has not yet occurred, 2) to cause bad that has already occurred to be extinguished, 3) to cause to occur good that has not yet occurred, 4) to promote the good that has already occurred.

Exertion / Restraint : vigorous action or effort / the act of holding back, controlling, or checking.

By “Dharma Gate”, We mean a teaching or practice that can lead to spiritual growth: some kind of positive outcome in terms of our practice. A way to approach the truth.

Koan: "The bright clarity of the ancestrial teacher's mind is the bright clarity of the hundred grass tips. With others it is never one: with the self it is never different. If you are only right, you are offending someone to their face. If you are only not right, where can you escape or hide. Therefore it is said, be neither right nor wrong; neither attached nor separate. All the tathagatas in the three times alike proclaim this truth; all the ancestrial teachers together transmit this wonder. "

Into only that which is right, then
There will be no room for that which is not.
