The 21st of 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate Twenty One
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.

Reflection on stillness is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] we do not disturb the mind.

By “Dharma Gate”, we mean a teaching or practice we can study to gain insights into the deepening our practice. It's a way to integrate our understanding of approaching reality.

    The Koan:
"No matter how much dirt you pile up, it's still just dirt."
-To You - Homeless Kodo pg 100
    Be still and know.

    Most note worthy replies :
Doing good creates spiritual stillness. It makes the world a better place, especially in a time when we seem to have lost our community-mindedness. Don’t let the modern spirit of selfishness infect you. Instead, focus on remembering what we are here for. We are here for each other.

    Stillness is the point when
I realize there is no self
And I am awash in the stuff of all sentient beings.

          When your body is still
You can hear your heart beat.
          When your mind is still
          What is there to hear?

I appreciate the reference to piling up dirt, as well as your comments about losing our sense of community and being overtaken by selfishness. Down the street from me, there's an evangelical church with a marquee on which the pastor frequently posts witty sayings. This week, it reads "Mud Thrown is Ground Lost."

I will sit quietly with my dirt.
