Gate Fourteen
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live it until evening when you can leave a brief comment on what you may have received during the process.
Benevolence is a gate of Dharma illumination; for [with it] good roots prevail in all the situations of life.
By “Dharma Gate”, we mean a teaching or practice we can study to gain insights into the deepening our practice. It's a way to integrate our understanding of approaching reality.
The Koan:
"Heaven and earth make offerings. Air,water, plants, animals and human beings make offerings, all things make offerings to each other. It's only within this circle of offering that we can live. Whether we appreciate this or not, it's true.
Without demanding, "Give it to me!" we make and receive offerings. The world in which we give and receive is a serene and beatutiful world. It differs from the world of scrambling for things. It's vast and boundless."
