    49/108 Gates of Dharma Illumination

    Forty-ninth Gate

Equality of all elements is a gate of Dharma illumination; for it obviates all rules for harmonious association.

For the want of a nail
    The shoe was lost.
For the want of a shoe
    The horse was lost.
For the want of a horse
    The soldier was lost.
For the want of a soldier
    The battle was lost.
For the want of a battle
    The kingdom was lost.
All for the want of a nail.

Please excuse any indication that I am trying to teach anything. I am a priest in training and have no qualifications or credentials to teach Zen practice or the Dharma.

      p.s. - a small edit:

For the loss of The Shoe The kingdom was lost. All for the want of a nail.

Makes one think more but, who said it was a contest

Nengei, Another stellar response. Well done my friend!

As for me, I couldn't help but see this Gate as a reflection on the precepts--when we are in accord with the precepts, all elements exist in perfect balance--no separation, no inequality.

        Sitting as we sit
        The precepts
        Happen on their own
