The sixth of the 108 Gates Of Dharma Illumination

    Gate Six
Read the following, place it in your heart and sleep on it. Then, tomorrow, live and practice it until evening when you can leave a brief comment as to insights or revelations you may have received during the process.

Pure conduct of the actions of the mouth is a gate of Dharma-illumination; for it eliminates the four evils*

*1) lying, 2) suppression of speech, 3) abusive speech, 4) duplicitous speech

The Koan: "Goso said, "When you meet a man of the Way on the path, do not meet with words or silence. Tell me, how will you meet him." - Mumonkan case 361

They may forget what you said, ...but they will never forget how you made them feel. - Zen is Right here / Suzuki

One poetic response to this question was:

Silence could be a cop out
When inwardly I rage and shriek
Ah! That is where that gate is.

          words spoken or thought
          divide us—
          silence keeps us whole

            Thank you Shokai

Right Conduct always brings quotes such a this one to mind.

The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.

Yes, while Right Speech is of utmost importance, Right Thought informs Right Speech. Our time on the cushion affects others in that way.
