[Ecodharma] A Hippo, a monk, and robes from recycled plastic [article]

    Dear all

This is an interesting piece about Thai Buddhist monk, Phra Mahapranom Dhammalangkaro, the abbot of Wat Chak Daeng temple, and his efforts to clean up Bangkok’s Chao Praya River from plastic pollution.

Remembering the vibrant river he knew as a child, he teamed up with a western charity, Seven Clean Seas, in order to build a solare- powered boat called a Hippo which collects plastic from the water. This is later recycled, including some of the plastic being used to make material which is in turn sewn into monks' robes and blankets.

The abbot of a temple in the Thai capital had already built up a recycling facility, but now he has a floating ally in his struggle to clean up the Chao Praya River
