    [Ecodharma] A Bit of Hope

I thought I'd post this article to give us some hope as most of us have previously discussed how hopeless we can feel when thinking about the environment, it's by Dr Hannah Ritchie who is lead researcher at Our World in Data, Oxford University:

    I liked the following quote

These people [changeable optimists] might not always put high odds on a better future — they may, in fact, think there’s only a slim chance of success. But the act of trying creates possibilities that no one knew about before, which build a concrete case for optimism

Yes, thank you for sharing, Heiso. It seems there is a sweet spot between pushing people into a state of fear and giving enough hope to keep trying but not falling into complacency.

Environmentalists can focus too much on what is going wrong (which, admittedly, is plenty!) and not enough on what is going right.

Thank you for sharing this, Heiso. I like that she says we need
the right kind of optimists: those who recognize that the world will only improve if we fight for it.
We might say these optimists have Active Hope.

I am working it on trying to be a Changeable Optimist. I realize that anything else is essentially unproductive.

Yes, I thought the Changeable Optimist didn't sound that far from the Ecosattva.

I thought the criticism of groups like Extinction Rebellion was interesting too. I was involved with them a few years ago but started to question some of the actions that disproportionately affected people likely to be on a lower income. And the author in this piece made the point that if some of their demands were met it could cause a humanitarian disaster. So it's worth considering that even when we think we're doing something important, we could be speaking from a place of privilege.
