What an incredible story of resilience and commitment to zen practice. What stuck with me was the fact that she could have stopped practicing, she could have given up. But she didn’t. Instead she wove her practice with her recovery. I have taken this to heart and will begin weaving my own practice with my recovery.

Life and death are of supreme importance.
    Time swiftly passes by
    And opportunity ist lost.
Each of us should strive to awaken.
    Awaken, take heed,
Do not squander your life.“ - Life and Death and The Great Matter

Reading this chapter has been such a humbling experience, I'm in awe, Shosan Austin is so so strong...

The way she chose to simplify her practice and just focus on the Three Pure Precepts while recovering from trauma, twice! While reading I couldn't stop thinking of all the little difficulties that probably filled her days, like eating, drinking water, getting out of bed, getting dressed, etc, how many opportunities she had to feel defeated, but instead she focused on her practice and overcame all her challenges. It was a very inspiring read, that I feel will continue to teach me for a long time.

        Hey Alina

Yes there are some very inspirational life-stories in this book, but I'd also direct you to this thread, as Jinkan is living and practising through, what I would call, extreme suffering and does a wonderful job of turning this dukkha into teachings for us all.
