I have been practicing in the Korean tradition since I started sitting. Yesterday I was thinking about how the soto chants differ from the seon ones. It is like looking at the same flower from a different angle.
There is one chant that I mentally repeat at odd times throughout the day. It is Kwan Seum Bosal, a chant to the Bodhisattva of compassion. I found myself curious as to Soto having its own version of this chant. Then I remembered this book. I will be ordering a copy tonight to follow along with everyone.

Hi James,
I do not believe that this Chant is common is Japan, as far as I know. I like the Korean chants as they are a bit more musical than the Japanese chants, which tend to maintain a steady, monotonous beat ...
Glad I'm not the only one that feels the Korean chants are a bit smoother and melodic. At this point I am not sure if you could beat the Kwan Seum Bosal chant out of me.
Either way I don't want to derail the thread. Looking forward to this read and the discussions it will produce.
I have decided this book is an excellent way to join back in with Treeleaf. I have been on the periphery and "Living by Vow" resonates for me as a real hurdle in more fully engaging in this practice.
I'm a bit late to this but I've just ordered the book and hope to join you all soon!

Yes. I close the threads every third week, just to keep us "on the same page", but no reason for you not to join in and comment on earlier chapters even in a later thread.
Thanks Shugen and Jundo. I was just going to join in where you are up to but it would be great to go back and do the other the chapters too. I love his writing. I am reading 'Realizing Genjokoan' at the moment. Would love to study that in the book club one day...it's a lot to digest on my own!
I have found with reading and even listening to dharma talks, sometimes it's better for me to not try and understand every little thing - just kind of let it sink in. A lot of the time, later on, something else I'm reading or listening to will pull things together and I find myself getting a glimmer of understanding. This really is a lifetime practice.
