While I found the history of the text and manuscripts really interesting, I think that we simply can't know these things for sure. I think that it is reasonable to assume that some of the teachings are actually Hui-Neng's, but that others are additions and recollections by his followers. As many have said, authenticity is to be found in the teachings, not in the historical attribution. Something valuable has come down to us from Shakyamuni Buddha, through Hui-Neng and his followers, and if the spirit of that insight still moves us today in the Platform Sutra, that is wonderful.
