Film Watching Club - Now Playing: Zen (2009)

    Hi all!

This is a little trailer for an upcoming Ridley Scott film, Life in a Day. I am really looking forward to watch this move. It was filmed by hundreds of people around the world and it depicts what people do in one day, around the planet.

When I see things like this I always think about how wonderful we are and wonder why on earth we tend to forget all the great things we have achieved as a civilization. Each time we go to war, each time we cause harm, lie, cheat... I don't think our ancestors are proud for that.

Still we flourish, we grow and we create wonders.

    We all are one.

They both look awesome. Also interesting that both are from film directors doing stuff quite different than the use to do.

One day we should start a movie club to comment movies too

That is a great idea actually. I am a huge movies fan and watching movies with you guys should be a great experience.

I think we should vote on a film, watch it and comment on it and see how it affects us.

          What do you guys think?

Found Zen the movie on eBay for $9.99 with free shipping. They had another 2 copies available.

I don't know if this is the one we are going to go with for starters but it looked interesting so I picked it up anyway.

Awesome choice, Shokai! Sounds pretty good to me.

Now when is the deadline for watching it? A month? I would have to track the movie since zen movies are super rare on this Aztec lads.

One movie a month sounds workable. This gives everyone a chance to get it then watch it when they have time. I first thought anyone who has it could stream it through UStream the same way Zazenkai is done but I'm not sure how legal that may be

HAHAHA Not legal at all and we could get in trouble for that. Supposedly you can't broadcast a movie or music unless you pay for the right to do it.

Maybe if we manage to make a private showing? Like in the meeting hall or upload the movie to a server for just a couple of days?

Which brings me to the question... what is Treeleaf's stance on file sharing?

I think it's best if we leave Treeleaf out of it as much as we can.

                          Hello Chocobuda,

I cannot speak for Treeleaf at all, but to me it isn't violating the word of the fourth precept (as it is freely given), but the spirit (as you know that you're supposed to be paying for it). As such, if one were to ask my opinion, I would advise against it as a violation of a grave precept. The only time, I think (in this situation) a moral/ethical ambiguity is an ambiguity is when one is trying to justify an activity one knows isn't wholesome.

On the other hand, if the author/distributor makes it obvious that whatever program/movie/book/what have you is freeware, or gives said item as a gift, or a friend loans a movie or book or somesuch, that is a different story. One needs to have the authority to give an item in order for it to be a gift.

                          Just my thoughts.

                          Metta,

Rent, buy, or borrow seems to be the most appropriate way to proceed with this. Saijun makes a great point in relation to the precepts! We wouldn't want to pick and discuss movies which relate to the principals of our practice all the while breaking those very principals to do it! All of life is an opportunity for Zen practice. Even picking and watching movies
