    A Short Cut to Mushrooms

    Dear all

Last week I gave an online talk at Glasgow Zen Group and this is basically a re-run of that, although I forgot to say a number of things I said at the time. It is a simple talk with a simple point but I hope you enjoy it if you choose to watch.

Thank you for this teaching. In addition to approaching how we practice while not on the cushion I like how Dogen also shows the benefit of being observant and curious in our interactions. When we're busily going through our day we just might miss the Dharma that can come from a stranger.

I have a lot to learn; take anything I say that sounds like teaching with a grain of salt.

Thank you for this talk. It truly gives one the essence of carrying sitting Shikantaza over into every day living.
But it also prompts me to tell you a Japanese joke about mushrooms. The word Shiitake( 椎茸)refers to a specific type of mushroom. So you could order Shiitake soup in a restaurant. Well, Japanese delight in telling of the story of a foreigner who ordered Shitagi (下着)soup.
Shiitake and Shitagi are very close in pronunciation. Whereas Shiitake translates as mushroom, Shitagi translates as underwear.
