    December 23rd Recommended Threads

I encourage looking at these threads, topics and posts today ...

For our Jukai folks ... PRECEPTS XI - To Refrain from Being Angry ...

... and packages should start arriving in the coming days ... What's In The Rakusu Envelope? ...

Sometimes Zazen can give rise to some fears or dark feelings ... The pain of practice ... when to ignore it, when to even let up on sitting ...
I’ve been really struggling to formulate this question. Sometimes I have answers, or bits of answers, but they float off and slip away and I'm left none the wiser. And when I read back through it there are bits that scream answers out at me (“Goals! Expectations! Grasping!”) and other bits that are ripe for a “Zen semantics”

Being with family this time of year ... SIT-A-LONG with JUNDO: Home for the Holidays!
(I would like to repost this Old Holiday Favorite :) ) =============================================== I would like to wish each and all members of Treeleaf, and our "Sit-a-Long" family, a Peaceful Rohatsu, Merry Christmas and Happy Chanukah ... .... as well as All the Happy Holidays of Peace and

... Fugen also say Ho Ho Ho ...

Can one's work and family also be at the center of one's Zen Practice? Of course! ... Minimalist Buddhism ...
So I tried for the second time to participate in Ango and Jukai, and just like last year I feel I simply failed. I'm a journalist in Brussels, Belgium, and I could say the reason I failed is because I worked very hard covering the terror attacks and terror scare, and covering so many other stuff along the way. But then again

A basic question, and some suggested reading, on the many different wonderful flavors of Zen and Buddhism in general ... Zazen vs Shikantaza ...
Good morning my friends :) I have been reading the many comments on Zazen and Shikantaza. I've also been reading the attachments and links on the main Soto page. My understanding is that Zazen seems goal oriented, ie: breathing, koan, etc., where Shikantaza is just sitting, letting all thoughts drop away, like grasping

Some discussion of Buddhist robes ... The trappings ...
I had some questions about Zen attire. I know a rakusu is sewn before taking the precepts. Is a kesa treated the same? Is it something for a person who has taken jukai? Are either article worn by people who haven't done so? What is the protocol concerning kimono and koromo? Do only teahers and priests wear them? If not, are

Dealing with angry people without getting angry ourselves ... tips from law enforcement folks ... Intimidation at work ...

I am so glad if this place and the practice are benefiting you. If so, you might consider a DONATION to Treeleaf at this LINK, although there is absolutely no need or requirement to do so. Thank you.

    A Re-MINDer on SIMPLICITY:

In a Zen Monastery, SILENCE or A FEW WISE WORDS are cherished over MANY WORDS. Thus, I advise folks to restrain the need to speak unless the heart truly calls. If you find yourself posting many times each day, maybe consider what truly needs to be said ... and when it is best just to answer with silence and an inner Gassho.

SILENCE OR A FEW HESITANT WORDS OF FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT OFTEN SPEAK MOST PROFOUNDLY. Post when it is truly important to you and needs to be spoken from the warm heart.

(too much silence or shyness can also be excessive ... so take the Middle Way!)

Also, to those who may get lost among the many threads and conversations in our Forum, please think of a monastery made of wood or brick, with 100 monks holding 10,000 conversations in the hallways, kitchen, Abbot's rooms and library (I assume no chatting in the Zendo where people sit Zazen).

Would you need or want to hear or join in all or most conversations? Of course not! You would, at best, pick and choose the conversations relevant and helpful to you.

So here too in our Sangha, NO NEED TO READ EVERY CONVERSATION: Try to note the ones that seem helpful to your Practice or interests, leave the rest. The above threads are a few suggestions.

Oh, and we do ask folks to note that they have SAT ZAZEN THE PREVIOUS DAY BEFORE POSTING IN THE FORUM (please read about that here):

Dear All, Treeleaf Sangha is a Practice Place centered on the daily Sitting of Shikantaza Zazen. We ask all our members to have sat Zazen sometime in the preceding day (today or yesterday) before posting in this Forum and joining in discussion. Please have "Sat" before any "Chat". gassho1 Also, both as

So far this year, I've given 35 dollars to Treeleaf Zendo--I wonder how well our equipment would function, how many great speakers we could invite, how many members we could help get started with Jukai. I plan to give 10 more dollars in January. As the year progresses, perhaps more--my heart is overflowing, and I am a grateful giver.
