    October 3rd Recommended Threads

I encourage looking at these threads, topics and posts today ...

Please sit with our monthly Zazenkai, featuring more of the Vimalakirti Sutra ... finding Nirvana right in this messy world ...
Our Zazenkai today is dedicated to an heir of my Dharma Brother Tenryu Bazy in France, Christian Reiyu Payen, whom I never met but who, I learned, passed from this world last December. Today's Talk will reflect on Further Passages from the Vimalakirti Sutra (text below in this thread) Christian Reiyu Payen Please sit

Don't kill the messenger, but our next Precept is up for reflection ... PRECEPTS III - To Refrain From Taking Life ...

We continue reading how to read (and write like) Dogen ... please give it a try ... The Zen Master's Dance - How To Read Dogen (to p. 12)
Hi Dogenites, We will continue our Dance this week with the chapter called "How To Read Dogen," up to the middle of page 12 (for our e-readers, stopping before the section "And Thus This Book"). In this section, I describe how it is necessary to understand some basic Buddhism or Mahayana Buddhist

On that theme, Nengei posted a little painting and drawing something in our arts section: ... ARTS: 2021 Ango Painting & Drawing Theme: The Dance
Greetings, Sangha, All the way back in 1990, Garth Brooks recorded a song called The Dance, written by Tony Arata. It was a fine song, and like most of Mr Brooks' music, expertly performed. But we aren't talking about that dance here. Instead... Let us reopen our creative efforts with an Ango-long painting and drawing

Please keep an eye out for our tea houses, and consider to stop by ... just for socializing, and a hot beverage ...
Informal, relaxed gatherings to chat, drink some tea and get to know other members.

And no matter if before or after tea time ... it can be time for Tonglen ...
A group for the practice of Tonglen (Giving and Receiving), guided by Kokuu. An ancient Practice for transformation of Suffering through visualization into love, peace and joy.

Take a moment ... 'The ZEN of EVERYTHING! Podcast' ... Episode 58 ... In the Moment ...

A reminder from Sekishi that we are looking for dependable volunteer hosts to facilitate online sittings ...

... now seems like a good time to remind everyone that any Sangha member can host a scheduled sit. All we ask is that once we post it you make a concerted effort to be in the SSR at the scheduled time (or find someone who can be there in your absence). While many of the sittings have the robe verse and opening and closing bells, even that is not strictly required.

If there is an open timeslot on the calendar that you feel you might be able to fill, feel free to PM myself (or any of the Unsui) with your questions. The more opportunities we have to sit together the better!

And DON'T FORGET! ... the experiment continues, and we need you! ... A TREELEAF EXPERIMENT with EVERYONE’S PARTICIPATION REQUESTED: “LAH” (Lend A Hand)
Dear All, As you know, we've asked folks to write “SAT TODAY” next to their signature before posting in this Forum. "SAT TODAY" means that someone has sat Zazen sometime during the past day, and that they will have “sat before chatting” in the Forum. Signing "SatToday" - Please

I am so glad if this place and the practice are benefiting you. If so, you might consider a DONATION to Treeleaf at this LINK, although there is absolutely no need or requirement to do so. Thank you.

    A Re-MINDer on SIMPLICITY:

In a Zen Monastery, SILENCE or A FEW WISE WORDS are cherished over MANY WORDS. Thus, I advise folks to restrain the need to speak unless the heart truly calls. If you find yourself posting many times each day, maybe consider what truly needs to be said ... and when it is best just to answer with silence and an inner Gassho.

SILENCE OR A FEW HESITANT WORDS OF FRIENDSHIP AND SUPPORT OFTEN SPEAK MOST PROFOUNDLY. Post when it is truly important to you and needs to be spoken from the warm heart.

(BUT too much silence or shyness can also be excessive ... so take the Middle Way!)

As a powerful Zen practice about not falling into words and thoughts, simplifying ideas, not getting tangled, we ask people to keep sentences few in posting. However, it is not some law or hard rule at all. If someone really has something in their heart to say, and it is vital and cannot be said more concisely or silently, then say what one is called to say: In such case, no limit on words needed.

As well, to those who may get lost among the many threads and conversations in our Forum, please think of a monastery made of wood or brick, with 100 monks holding 10,000 conversations in the hallways, kitchen, Abbot's rooms and library (I assume no chatting in the Zendo where people sit Zazen).

Would you need or want to hear or join in all or most conversations? Of course not! You would, at best, pick and choose the conversations relevant and helpful to you.

So here too in our Sangha, NO NEED TO READ EVERY CONVERSATION: Try to note the ones that seem helpful to your Practice or interests, leave the rest. The above threads are a few suggestions.

Oh, and we do ask folks to note that they have SAT ZAZEN DURING THE LAST DAY BEFORE POSTING IN THE FORUM (please read about that here):

After surgery, I will meditate, I will count breath going under, and coming out from under. Before, as much as I am able. Breathing therapies do help me get better. I know meditation, not just zazen, but mostly I will rest, lots of rest. Ten people in the OR Surgeon Dr. Voum, his PA. a regular Dr Anesthatist , 10 or more people for my million dollar surgery. Before long you will help someone, just as you have helped me; maybe someday soon. A good phone receptionist helped me pick out a new doctor. Dr Funk might have picked this doctor. He can follow me after Dr Funk who has been a great for 17 years. He will retire soon. I had picked Dr Funk at the recomendation of a testy old Rheumatolist, Dr. Mallak who barked at me about smoking . I have gone through many Rheumatoligista but one Dr Allan Funk. A year before I quit smoking, our daughter came running home from school crying, begging me to quit. This still breaks my heart. One year after that I quit, daughter, now 32, turned 12 when I quit. Marjorie, wife and mother, has written time and name of the young doctor, and just in time for surgery pre-op. My daughter saved my life by making me realize just how horrible smoking is. I might never have had this surgery to save my life had I not quit smoking. I meet with my Cardiologist because I have a pacemaker; I have a simple one wire device. My heart muscle is strong because several years back I did manual labor, before at age 20, at age 37 , again, although I have severe arthritis in my spine, as I came tp middle age. I am strong for age 70 even with severe arthritis. Everything is in place for an extraordinary brain surgery; type one AVM. When I come home from the hospital, I will have a three inch scar on the upper right part of my head. I will rest for at least a month. Because I don't have to leave home, I will sit here with you before that month is up. I thank you all from my heart for being here with me with this. You are my friends.
