    O-Jutsu, Nenjutsu....prayer beads

Was looking for guidance, thoughts on the use of O-Jutsu (prayer beads), in Soto Zen, and particularly in our practice and Sangha at Treeleaf.

Although not used while "sitting", I have used them for sutra chanting, etc. I normally wear them on my left wrist as a constant reminder of my practice to me.

    Thoughts?

    Hi Frank,

We've had a few discussions about these in the past. Long story short, not really emphasized in our little corner of the world. But some people use them.

I have a mala that my dad brought me from India, made of teak. I used it a lot when I began in Yoga, and I really enjoyed the practice of chanting out loud or silently with the beads. Now, since I have been focusing on Buddhism, my beads are neglected. I know that they are used in Buddhist practice, but I don't know how they

Does anybody here ever use a mala? I never use one for Zazen, which i keep traditional, but I often do use one for a weird kind of metta practice. The mala is 108 beads, and as I sit on my Zafu, I hold the mala with my left hand and touch each bead in turn with my right thumb and forefinger, one bead per breath. Touching the

I sat (Burmese, as usual) zazen with my sangha (http://clearwaterzencenter.org) Sunday; during the third round went and sat in daisan. When I arose, ; my "bad" knee went seriously bad, so I spent yesterday in a chair with my leg up on a pillow, or hobbling about on my cane. As I was convalescing, I took the

        Hi Frank,

Yes, whatever was said last time I guess, like here.

Read the various meanings given to the number 108. Really neat.

Thank you, Kaishin. Saved me a look for some of those threads (I did not realize there were that many). I hereby appoint you our Official Treeleaf Archivist! Congratulations.

I was joking yesterday that, after 10 years of this place, about 1/3 of my advice to people these days is "cut and paste"

PS - What do we pay you as Official Treeleaf Archivist? Nothing as base as money, that is for sure ...

Wow! Speaking of archiving, I feel like I'm dusting the mothballs off myself when I see how young Bill Murray is in that movie...

                            Only 1/3 ???

As for the mala, I wear mine around the neck to work, sometimes openly, sometimes hidden, to remind me of the rakusu which obviously I don't wear for work.
