It seems that some Buddhists still believe heavily in superstition, magic and the power of talismans (in the form of tattoos) despite what the teachings of the Buddha say about relying on such.

I tend to prefer the Japanese irezumi, although typically found on Yakuza and such ... (not all the images are Buddhist, by the way, and often borrow from Shinto, traditional myths, etc).
